A listing is how you put something up for sale. It connects four things:
What is for sale: an item or a product.
The price: an amount and a currency.
The license: the terms the buyer gets.
The status: whether it’s on sale right now.
Items and products describe what you’ve made. Listings describe how you sell it. Keeping the two apart means you can sell the same thing in more than one way without copying it.
One item, several listings
Each listing has its own price and license, so you can offer the same item or product on different terms:
Personal use at one price, commercial use at another.
An album as a whole, plus each track on its own.
A buyer always buys through one specific listing, and their receipt records which one.
Selling items from a product
Every item belongs to a product, and you can also sell items individually. Each item listing works one of two ways:
Under the product. The listing follows the product listing: it pauses when the product pauses, and is retired if the product listing is deleted. Your storefront groups it under the product.
On its own. The listing has its own price, license and status. Pausing or editing the product’s listing doesn’t affect it.
An item can only be sold under the product once the product itself has a listing.
Listing Statuses
Active : On sale. Buyers can check out.
Paused : Hidden from sale, but kept. Resume it whenever you like.
Retired : Deleted. To sell again, create a new listing.
Past buyers are unaffected by any of these. A buyer’s download access comes from their receipt, not from whether the listing is still active.
Editing a listing
You can change a listing’s price or status at any time. Changes apply to future buyers only. Every receipt pins the exact version of the listing the buyer paid against, so editing a listing never changes an existing purchase.
A listing also pins the version of the item it sells. When you edit an item’s details, Bazaar updates the listing to point at the new version for you. Checkout checks this, so a buyer is never charged for an item that changed after the listing was set up.
Before you can sell
A listing needs a license before it can go on sale. Create the license first, then choose it when you create the listing. See Licenses.
